The Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman announced yesterday that a badger cull will be trialled in 2012.

The decision has been welcomed by CLA President Harry Cotterell and NFU President Peter Kendall as forming part of a well managed bovine TB control policy. Peter Kendall reminded the public and badger campaigners that the inclusion of a cull in the policy has "never been about eradicating badgers; it is about eradicating disease".

David Williams of the Badger Trust said that they were "clearly disappointed" by the announcement.

The location of trial areas will be agreed following applications from landowners.
