Employment law update: zero-hours contracts

Posted on 19th October 2015 in The Lodders Blog

The issues surrounding zero-hours contracts have been much discussed in the recent press. Nick Rowe, employment solicitor and Head of Employment Law at Lodders’ Cheltenham office, explains.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has produced a guide for employers on zero-hour contracts (click here to view the guidance). It explains in high level terms to employers how zero-hour contracts work, the difference between appropriate and inappropriate use of such arrangements, and gives guidance on best practice and alternatives to zero-hour contracts.

What does this mean for you?

Zero hours contracts can be used as an effective tool in order to allow flexibility for both contracting parties (employer and employee). However, they should really not be considered as an alternative to proper business planning and should not be used as a permanent arrangement if it is not justifiable.

Lodders’ employment solicitors offer accurate, focused and solution-based legal advice from our offices in Stratford upon Avon and Cheltenham to a wide range of clients, who require assistance with the complexities of employment law. For help or advice please contact Nick Rowe on 01242 229096 or drop him an email.
