June Quarter Day – Landlord & Tenant webinar now available

More than 90 delegates joined expert speakers Vicky Khandker and Ellie Crofts on Thursday 4 June for the latest Lodders webinar – ‘Landlord and Tenant Update: Payment – or non-payment – of the June Quarter Day’s rent’.

The webinar, which covered a variety of topical issues, such as the Coronavirus Act, CRAR, predictions for the June quarter, and advice for both landlords and tenants, is now available on-demand via the link below.

Reflections on the March Quarter

Dispute resolution expert Ellie Crofts kicked off the session, reflecting on the March quarter, noting that many tenants in a tricky financial situation did eventually reach out to their landlords. She further explained some of the finer points of the Coronavirus Act, and what this means for commercial tenants and landlords.

This was followed by Vicky Khandker, Partner in our Dispute Resolution team, who discussed some methods for landlords needing to recover rent, as well as the potential for the government to introduce a ‘Furloughed Space Grant Scheme’. She also noted the importance of properly documenting steps such as rent deferrals and seeking advice to ensure they are not misconstrued as rent holidays.

The popular Landlord and Tenant Update follows dispute resolution expert, Vicky Khandker’s recent interview with the BBC, in which she commented on the recent increase in the number of shops refusing to pay their rent since the coronavirus lockdown.

Advice for landlords and tenants

The presentations wrapped up with some advice for tenants and landlords respectively, and the resounding message was clear: communication is key to working through any issues with meeting rent demands. Ellie noted that rent will have to be paid eventually, with Vicky adding that tenants and landlords must open talks, as there is no one size fits all remedy.

Jane Senior, head of Lodders’ Dispute Resolution team, then closed the session with an informative Q&A, covering some of the long-lasting changes which could occur due to the current lockdown, as well as some more specific scenarios from individual delegates. Jane advised that anyone who is unsure or has a query should reach out to a member of the team, who are here to help and are only a phone call away.
