Employment law update: Progress report on equalities and human rights published

Posted on 20th November 2015 in Legal Updates

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has published a progress report summarising the key findings concerning human rights and equality within education, work, healthcare, justice and security. Nick Rowe, head of Lodders’ Employment team in Stratford upon Avon and Cheltenham explains:

The EHRC has a statutory duty, under section 12 of the Equality Act 2006, to monitor progress on equality and human rights in Britain. The law report was published in 2010. The report’s findings cover all areas of formal discrimination set out in law: age, disability, gender, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation and transgender status.

The report considers that one of the most significant areas of improvement would be to encourage fair recruitment, development and reward in employment. The report highlights that while the gender pay gap has narrowed, this is owing to men’s average pay declining more than women’s.

Whilst the statistics indicate that the average pay gap between women and men is decreasing, they also demonstrate that there remains a concerning gap in remuneration levels in the 40s. The obvious implication is that females are still failing to be recognised equitably in the years after they may have taken career breaks in order to have children.
