Rural lawyer joins Lodders’ Agricultural team as associate

Lodders Agriculture Ruper Burchett James Spreckley

Lodders has appointed lawyer Rupert Burchett as an associate in its Agricultural and Landed Estates team.

Based at Lodders’ Cheltenham office, Rupert (pictured left) will work alongside James Spreckley, partner and head of the department and the rest of the agricultural team, which is described by the Chambers Guide to the UK Legal Profession as one of the country’s most highly respected.

After qualifying as a lawyer in 2011, Rupert worked in the agricultural sector for several years, before realising a lifelong ambition to join the Army. He completed his military training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was commissioned as a Captain into the Army Legal Services in 2015, subsequently being promoted to Major in 2020.

“We are delighted to welcome Rupert to our expanding agricultural team,” says James. “He brings a wealth of contacts with the rural community and a palpable interest and passion for the countryside and country activities.

“Alongside building on his established relationships in Gloucestershire from his previous time in private practice, Rupert will work with rural businesses, landowners, farmers and individuals across Warwickshire, the West Cotswolds, and Oxfordshire, to develop our expanding spread of clients across the region.”

Strong ties

Of joining Lodders, Rupert says: “I was keen to find a position that enabled me to work with and to support local farmers, landowners and rural entrepreneurs. Lodders is actively involved in the sector, as well as being a fantastic, forward-looking and ambitious firm with strong ties to the agricultural and rural community throughout its long history. The role means I can join up my love of the countryside with a rewarding legal position, supporting and helping those living and working there during a time of significant change.”

Alongside his legal role, Rupert will continue his military involvement as a Major in the Army Reserves: “I am hugely grateful to Lodders for supporting me in doing so,” he says. “It will be good to be back in Cheltenham and the Cotswolds after a period of moving around with the Army.”
