Showjumping legend to be honoured at Kenilworth Show

A show jumping legend is set to be honoured as teams of riders from across the country compete at the Kenilworth Show.

The inaugural Ted Edgar Memorial Trophy will be awarded to the winning team in the Inter Hunt Relay at Coventry and Warwickshire’s largest one-day agricultural show on Saturday, June 8.

A total of eight teams will be competing for the prize which remembers Leek Wootton’s Ted Edgar who passed away in December last year at the age of 85.

Edgar was a top showjumper in the 1950s, 60s and 70s – notably with American ex-rodeo horse Uncle Max. He was the first to bring sponsorship packages to the sport with Everest Double Glazing, raising the sport’s profile on television and in the wider media.

As a teenager, he competed in the gymkhanas at the Kenilworth Show when it was held at Abbey Fields.

First-time at Show

The Inter Hunt Relay is being supported by Lodders, which is at the Kenilworth Show for the first time this year, and each team will field four riders in the competition.

It will take place in the main ring at the show at 4.45pm, which is organised by Kenilworth and District Agricultural Society (KADAS) and will be held on the showgrounds opposite Stoneleigh Park.

There will be a course of one metre fences for the horses to jump and obstacles to navigate, before passing the baton on to the next rider in the relay team.

Two teams will run parallel to each other with the winning side progressing to the next round.

John Bausor, who is organising the Inter Hunt Relay at the Kenilworth Show, said: “It is an honour to be able to remember Ted Edgar with the introduction of the memorial trophy at this year’s show.

“He is a true legend of show jumping and after speaking with his wife Liz Edgar, we agreed this would be a great way to recognise his achievements.

“We are all looking forward to the Inter Hunt Relay and it really will be a great main ring spectacle for everyone who is in attendance on the day.

“The competition will feature some of the top teams from across the country and it is set to be one of the highlights of this year’s show.”

The hunts competing on the day include Worcestershire, Avon Vale, Warwickshire, Cotswold, North Cotswold, Oakley and two teams from Duke of Beaufort.

One of the best

James Spreckley, head of Lodders’ Rural Sector team added: “The Kenilworth Show is one of the best agricultural and countryside shows in the area.

“We are really looking forward to taking part for the first time this year, both as sponsor of the Inter Hunt Relay, but also as a stakeholder in the local rural community, with our marquee where we can meet up with our clients and contacts, and at which we would love to see visitors to the show generally.

Lodders has worked with individuals and businesses in all areas of the rural economy and community for all of its 230 years. We continue to see taking an active role in local events such as the Kenilworth Show as an important way for us to support our local communities and meet people who, like us, have a passion for the countryside.”

Advance tickets for the Kenilworth Show cost £12.50 and are available from

Tickets can also be purchased from Kenilworth Library and Farmers Fayre at Stoneleigh Park.

Gates open at 9am and a free shuttle bus will run from Kenilworth Clock Tower to the show throughout the day.
